Fable Coffee Roasters

A packaging system for a fictional sustainable coffee brand, designed to replace the plastic-heavy materials common in coffee packaging. All components use recycled paper and kraft materials that can be recycled or composted at end of life, with minimal treatments to ease decomposition.

The Project

Project Brief

The assigned project was to design a sustainable packaging series consisting of 3 parts. The design has to propose a sustainable alternative to preexisting packaging systems.

For this, I designed coffee packaging. Standard coffee packaging is heavy on plastic use, from single-use coffee pods to bags of ground beans. The series included one bag of ground beans, a box of whole beans, and a box of 24 single-use coffee pods.

Research

In order to create a sustainable solution to coffee packaging, I first research pre-existing sustainable packaging solutions. I also sought inspiration from packaging books to see how other designers have approached packaging similar items.

Developement and Prototyping

First Iterations

Experimenting with form and different ways of constructing containers, I played with the idea of a cylindrical package for the whole coffee beans.

Second Iterations

Continuing on to different options and looking at packaging for the other two items in the series, I looked at pour-boxes and ways to seal a paper bag without the use of plastics or metal.

Third Iteration

After setting on the forms, I progressed to creating the dielines and developing the graphics.
